Between the port and the sea
Would you like to experience a real maritime atmosphere all year round? You can watch the comings and goings of the fishing boats between the jetties, the auction, the shipyards… and there’s the beaches, of course! Explore Le Grau d’Agde, a charming fishing village. Peaceful and welcoming, for a day or longer, this port is definitely worth the detour!
A stroll around Le Grau d’Agde
This traditional fishing village is located just by the town of Agde, on the edge of the Mediterranean, on the left bank of the river Hérault. Its formerly strong port activity is naturally due to its geographical location. Located at the mouth of the Hérault, the Delta has proved a perfect spot for the safe anchoring of commercial vessels and the development of fishing.
Take the small road that meanders along the river to get to Le Grau d’Agde. A little bit of advice: travel at walking pace to enjoy the beauty of the environment. On foot or by bike, this pleasant walk can be done safely, along the cycle path. During the summer season, a ‘smugglers’ service means you can get to Le Grau d’Agde directly from La Tamarissière and vice versa.
A typical, lively village
The small fishing port of Le Grau d’Agde saw its largest development during the first half of the 20th century. Between tradition and modernity, the village has found its balance. It retains its authenticity and combines its customs and traditional fishing activities with a warm welcome and entertainment. Fête des pêcheurs, Fête de la mer, Fête du pointu… Fishermen really know how to welcome their guests! Beaches, shops, services, a daily market in summer, you’ll easily find what you are looking for and, without doubt, you’ll be charmed by the colourful, family atmosphere.

A closer look at Notre Dame de l’Agenouillade
Built in 1653 on the initiative of Henry I of Montmorency, governor of Languedoc, the chapel was built around a rock marked with an image of the Virgin, which can be seen inside.
According to legend, in the 5th century she appeared kneeling, praying, to roll back the waves during a storm that threatened to flood the whole country. The sober chapel, decorated with a lantern of the dead is part of the sanctuary of Notre Dame du Grau.
Our recommendation
The belvédère de la criée du Grau d’Agde
The first and only site in the Mediterranean dedicated to the understanding of this still relatively unknown sector, immerse yourself in the heart of the Auction, its fishing fleet, its facilities, its operation and its wealth. Open all year round, by appointment for groups and for individual visitors.
